CDH Kenya appoints new Corporate & Commercial Partner, Martha Mbugua

Cliffe Dekker Hofmeyr’s (CDH) Nairobi office is delighted to welcome the esteemed Martha Mbugua to the firm. She joined as a Partner in the Corporate & Commercial practice, as of 1 September 2022. Martha has more than 13 years in three globally ranked law firms in Nairobi, she also worked briefly in South Africa and in the legal departments of Barclays Bank of Kenya (now Absa Bank Kenya Plc) and East Africa Breweries Limited.

Martha obtained her LLM – International Commercial Law (Financing International Trade, International Oil & Gas Law, and International Commercial Arbitration) at the University of Birmingham.

Her combination of wide-ranging experience in both corporate law firms and as inhouse counsel, has provided Martha with a wealth of experience in Private Equity and Venture Capital structuring and investments, M&A, corporate and debt restructuring, and general corporate and commercial law.

Martha is well recognised in the East African market, by her wealth of accolades; she is founder and managing partner of boutique law firm Law3Sixty, with IFLR ranking her as a rising star in the Private Equity/Mergers in 2017, 2018 and 2019 and as a highly regarded lawyer in 2021 and 2022. In 2018 Martha was recognised by Legal500 as a recommended lawyer in the Kenyan market. Kenya’s Business Daily newspaper ranked her as one of the Top 40 under 40 Women for the year 2017, and noted Martha as one of the youngest female partners specialising in private equity/mergers and acquisitions.

Martha obtained her LLB at the University of Nairobi. Thereafter she attended the Kenya School of Law where she undertook the Advocates Training Program Diploma in Law. Martha obtained her LLM – International Commercial Law (Financing International Trade, International Oil & Gas Law, and International Commercial Arbitration) at the University of Birmingham.
