Brigitta emphasised that while the criminal justice system is intended to provide unwavering protection for survivors of sexual abuse, many face extraordinary challenges when attempting to report their cases.

She explained that these challenges often stem from systemic issues such as a lack of capacity to handle cases effectively, improper application of the law, and a significant lack of sensitivity in dealing with sexual abuse matters. This insensitivity and failure to appreciate the unique circumstances of survivors often discourages them from coming forward to report crimes of sexual abuse to a system that is meant to support and protect them.

Brigitta highlighted that lawyers play a crucial role in holding the state accountable for its failures to uphold the law and ensure the criminal justice system fulfills its mandate. However, she also stressed that sexual abuse and violence are not solely legal issues but deeply rooted social issues. A lack of sensitivity in handling cases often reflects personal biases creeping into processes, which should never be the case.

She called for increased sensitivity training and collaboration with justice system members to ensure responses to survivors are grounded in kindness, compassion, and a thorough understanding of the unique circumstances they face. Brigitta concluded by emphasising the collective responsibility we share as a society to create a system that fully supports survivors of sexual abuse and violence.
