Gift Xaba, Senior Associate in the Pro Bono & Human Rights practice joined Naledi Moleo on Newzroom Afrika to discuss Silence is violence: The role of men in advocating for women’s rights and curbing the rise of gender-based discrimination.

Gift emphasises that it is time for men to take a more active role in advocating for women’s rights, aligning with President Ramaphosa's pledge against gender-based violence and femicide.

He further explains that our attitudes outside the workplace influence our behaviour within it, reflecting the mindset of our community and society. It is crucial for those in leadership and positions of influence to set an example and be clear in their messaging on these issues. When leaders take a stand, it gives momentum to the conversation, and we've already seen some steps taken by various organisations to support this cause.

According to Gift, part of the solution lies in men promoting and protecting the aspects of our cultures that celebrate the remarkable power of women. Women have played—and will continue to play—an essential role in building communities, driving societal progress, and fostering human innovation. Their contributions directly impact the welfare of all South Africans and our nation's future. This is the message that men need to promote and amplify.
