The alarming rise in cybercrime: How businesses can legally protect themselves.
Nomlayo highlights that while technology offers convenience, it has also led to an alarming increase in cybercrime, making it easier for fraudsters to access our devices.
Nomlayo explains that cybercrime includes ransomware attacks, where data is stolen and ransoms demanded; hacking, where data is infiltrated; and phishing scams, which often involve deceptive emails. Phishing scams are particularly prevalent, targeting both individuals and companies.
Nomlayo says that securing emails is crucial, as fraudsters can intercept communications. For instance, when buying property, a fraudster might infiltrate a conveyancing attorney's emails and send fake account details to the buyer, resulting in the loss of funds.
Nomlayo adds that to prevent this, always call and verify account details before making payments. Agree on a secure method for receiving banking details, such as using password-protected PDFs with the password sent separately via SMS. This makes it harder for fraudsters to alter email details. From a legal standpoint, Nomlayo notes that jurisprudence in this area is still developing as the law tries to keep pace with technological advancements.
